Compare the amount paid before the amount crossed out
In our October 16 Steam US snapshot, Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun is $3.99 against a $39.99 reference, Batman: Arkham Asylum Game of the Year Edition is $2.99 against $19.99, and Enter the Gungeon is $2.99 against $14.99. The corresponding badges are 90%, 85% and 80%. All three records can be correct at the same time, but the largest percentage is not the smallest purchase.
For someone with a hard $3 budget, the $3.99 game does not fit. The two $2.99 games do. That is a concrete filtering task which a percentage ranking answers poorly. For a $10 shortlist, one copy of each costs $9.97 before any regional differences; the spending calculation is more useful than averaging their discount percentages.
A reference price is not the value of your free time
Subtracting $3.99 from $39.99 produces a $36 difference. It does not mean the buyer has earned $36, and it does not measure how much enjoyment the game will provide. A purchase the player never opens is still a cash outlay. The useful next question is whether the genre, controls, session length and hardware requirements fit the person making the choice.
GameInfo does not assign a gameplay verdict from sales metadata. The source can tell us a genre or a published requirement, but not whether a particular player will enjoy the experience. We keep the budget filter, the price-history inspection and the requirements comparison as separate tools, so the limits are not hidden inside an opaque score.
Check whether today is exceptional within the observed window
A high badge can appear on several consecutive observations. Seeing the same quote again is not evidence of a newly rare opportunity. The price lab reports how many recorded dates share the minimum, allowing a reader to distinguish an isolated observation from a price repeated throughout the window.
This still does not establish the full duration of a sale. Missing days are not continuous coverage, and repeated daily samples can miss changes between the samples. We therefore avoid countdowns inferred from a short time series. When an official expiry is unavailable, a made-up timer would add urgency without adding evidence.
Build a shortlist you would still consider without the badge
Choose the total amount you are prepared to spend. Filter for the features you actually need, such as co-op, while remembering that store metadata is not a compatibility test. Then inspect the history of the remaining games and compare the publisher requirements with your own system.
If several options meet those conditions, saving them locally is a better next step than treating the highest discount as an instruction to purchase. A target can express your own trade-off. It should not be presented as a guaranteed future price, and the tool does not send a notification or place an order on your behalf.
